The Year of Jubilee

And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all its inhabitants.  It shall be a Jubilee for you; and each of you shall return to his possession, and each of you shall return to his family. -Leviticus 25:10

Another portrait of our redemption is found in this Scripture in Leviticus. While talking to Moses on Mount Sinai, God established the Year of Jubilee. According to the instructions He gave to Moses, every fiftieth year would be a special time of setting people free from debt and servitude. (vv. 8:10.)

This wasn’t meant to be just an old covenant blessing. When Jesus was just beginning His earthly ministry, He said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor…to set at liberty those that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4:18,19). Jesus said that part of His commission was to preach the acceptable year of the Lord, or the Year of Jubilee.

Jesus came to establish the new covenant through His death, burial and resurrection. So, apparently, the Year of Jubilee was not only meant to be an Old Testament blessing, but also a New Testament blessing. The Old Testament Year of Jubilee was simply a picture of what Jesus Christ would one day do for us when He came to this earth—wipe out our debt of sin and set us free!

CONFESSION:

Jesus is my Jubilee. He bought me back from the power of darkness and translated me into the kingdom of God. Praise God. He has made available everything I could ever need for an abundant life on this earth!
