Healing in the Atonement

On the next day all the congregation of the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, saying “You have killed the people of the Lord.”  And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.” And they fell on their faces.

So Moses said to Aaron, “Take a censer and put fire in it from the altar, put incense on it, and take it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone out from the Lord., The plague has begun.” Then Aaron took it as Moses commanded and ran into the midst of the assembly; and already the plague had begun among the people. So, he put in the incense and made atonement for the people. And he stood between the dead and the living so the plague was stopped. Now those who died in the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred besides those who died in the Korah incident. -Exodus 16:41, 44-49

Numbers 16 gives us another portrait of our redemption. Soon after the Israelites were delivered out of Egypt’s bondage, they began to worship idols and criticize the men of God in charge. Their muttering and complaining put them in dangerous territory.

It is clear that God was more than a little upset with these rebellious people. A plague hit the multitude, and more than 14,000 died before anything could be done. Aaron quickly prepared incense to make atonement before all the people died. He ran into the midst of the congregation and stood between the people and the plague. Atonement was made for the people and the plague was stopped.

This is a portrait of the Atonement Jesus made for us. You see, when Aaron made atonement for the sin of the Israelites, they were not only forgiven, but the sick were healed. Well, if healing was included in atonement under the old covenant, how much more is it included in the Atonement Jesus purchased for us by His blood?

CONFESSION:

Jesus is my Atonement. His sacrifice gives me access to all of God’s benefits and blessings. I receive them now by faith in Jesus’ name.
